1. Project Overview

Jacko Contracting was proud to partner with Little Prints Daycare to restore safe and reliable playground access for the children. Their outdoor deck had become unsafe for daily use and required immediate removal and full rebuilding.

This project was especially meaningful to our team because it involved creating a secure environment for young children — ensuring that the space was not only functional, but safe, strong, and long-lasting.

2. Client Needs and Safety Requirements

The daycare required:

  • Immediate removal of unsafe deck structure
  • A rebuilt frame strong enough for heavy daily use
  • Outdoor space that meets safety standards
  • Added weather protection to increase lifespan
  • Proper airflow under the deck to reduce moisture and rot

3. Existing Conditions and Issues

During inspection, it was determined that:

  • The old deck was no longer structurally sound
  • Wood rot and deterioration posed safety hazards
  • The frame could not support children’s frequent use
  • The entire structure needed to be removed

4. Our Solution — Scope of Work

Work completed included:

  • Full demolition and disposal of the old deck
  • Construction of new upper and lower frames
  • Total rebuild covering approximately 600 sq. ft.
  • Installation of protective joist tape to extend lifespan of beams and joists
  • Construction of new stairs for added accessibility
  • Installation of under-deck vents to support airflow

5. Materials and Structural Enhancements

To ensure long-term durability, we used:

  • 2 x 6 pressure-treated lumber as decking material for strength and longevity
  • 2 x 8 boards installed around the perimeter for a strong, clean border finish
  • Joist tape to protect joists from moisture exposure
  • Venting beneath deck surfaces to prevent rot and future damage

6. Construction Process

  1. Initial site evaluation and planning
  2. Removal and safe disposal of all old deck materials
  3. Preparation of site and layout of new frame
  4. Framing and joist installation
  5. Joist taping for weatherproofing
  6. Decking installation using 2×6 lumber
  7. Perimeter border installation
  8. Stair construction and finishing
  9. Placement of under-deck vents
  10. Final walkthrough and safety inspection

7. Final Outcome and Benefits

Upon completion, the daycare received:

  • A completely rebuilt, safe and secure outdoor deck space
  • A long-lasting structure designed for heavy foot traffic
  • Weather-protected framing and improved airflow to prevent rot
  • A brighter, more functional outdoor environment for children to enjoy

The Little Prints team shared that they were relieved and excited to have their outdoor playground usable once again — and that children now have safe access for daily activity.

8. Why Safety Matters in Daycare Construction

Unlike standard residential decks, daycare outdoor structures must:

  • Support frequent movement and weight
  • Prevent splintering or surface hazards
  • Protect framing from environmental damage
  • Remain secure for long-term child safety

This project demonstrates our commitment to building with care, especially where safety and community impact are involved.
