Building and renovating in Toronto
Most of our Toronto work is in older houses: brick semis and row houses in Leslieville, the Danforth, Roncesvalles and the Annex, and 1950s bungalows in North York, Etobicoke and Scarborough. Those houses bring the same issues again and again: low basements, knob-and-tube wiring, shared walls and tight side yards where every material gets carried in by hand.
Toronto now allows up to four units on residential lots city-wide, plus garden suites and laneway suites, so many owners are adding income units while they renovate. See our guide to Toronto’s pre-approved multiplex plans. Toronto Building issues the permits, and work near a City-protected tree needs a separate tree permit, which we flag early.
